The birth of a new supercomputer – Computerome

Tomorrow is a big day for CBS and LifeScience in Denmark in general, as tomorrow is the day where the new supercomputer Computerome will have its official inauguration. Here you can read a danish and an english news post from DTU about Computerome.

With more than 15.000 cores, 96 TeraByte of memory and 3 PetaByte of storage, Computerome currently ranks as number #121 of the most powerful High Performance Computer Systems (HPC) in the world! I have personally been testing it for a month running human De-novo assemblies for the GenomeDenmark project and I can only agree, COMPUTEROME Rocks… !

In the phase 1 trial we were able to finish 41 AllpathsLG de-novo assemblies and generated more than 350TB of data, data amounts that would not have been possible at our older systems. Performance wise there is a factor 10 per assembly, meaning that in 10 days it is possible to finish an assembly, a job that takes 3-4 weeks at our older systems. Furthermore it was possible to run 27 jobs in parallel on the 27 x 1 TeraByte memory nodes.

Last Friday I had the pleasure of seeing the monster live – and it is really fantastic. Love the smell of new hardware 🙂

  3. Hi, I am interested in knowing if this new computing facility for Denmark will somehow used by or connected to the ELIXIR European Research Infrastructure supporting life science for biological information.

    I am asking as I am technical director of the European Grid Infrastructure that federated computing infrastructures (mainly cloud and high throughput computing) to support international research collaborations in various disciplines including life science.

    I’d like to know how the server vs “server room” expenses where divided on your budget.

    I work in a public research center in Italy and the “server room” factor is dramatically growing as an expense chapter…

    • Thanks 🙂

      To be honest, I don’t know. I have not been a part of the actual planning of the server related to that. I have been testing it and played a role in specifying the needs within NGS in terms of compute, and now I’m looking forward to using it in the daily life.
      I know that the serverroom has a very high standard and high security. Pretty interesting to see as well, and the cooling is extremely powerful. When Ali set the cooling to max it was like standing in a storm. The heat produced by the servers are fed directly into the central heating making the HPC, as far as I have heard, on the top10 list of the greenest HPC’s in terms of environment 🙂

        1st of all thanks for your kind reply! I work over the Bari section of the Institute of Biomedical Technologies of Italy’s National Research Council (CNR).

        Here we divide a big room between various Institutes. Problem is that the room was started in 2000 and in these last fifteen years each one’s infrastructure has grown a LOT. We’re waiting for the design and then the realization of a new server room … hopefully we’ll be done for the summer, then we’ll start to move…

          We had the same experiences as you, starting in 1996 with servers in the basement in defined space. Then buying more and more servers, but the room kept the same size. As you can see on the video I posted yesterday there is really room for growth where the new servers are located 🙂

          Do you work with the actual servers or do you do research? I see you have both Databases and tools online 🙂
