DTU appoints new director of DTU Systems Biology

DTU has with effect from 1 January 2014 employed Hanne Østergaard Jarmer as new departmental director of the Department of Systems Biology. She comes from a position as head of education at the same institution.

“We are pleased that Hanne Jarmer has accepted the position as the new director of the Department of Systems Biology. She is a person with great overview that will work with dedication for the Institute cohesion and cooperation among employees, “says rector, Anders Bjarklev.

He emphasizes the 40-year-old Hanne Jarmers passion for education, and represents her as “a pioneer woman when it comes to developing new teaching methods.”

“We have the best researchers and educators that exist, and our students are made of a special fabric. So there is no doubt in my heart when I say that I am looking forward immensely to stand in the middle of the development, which will take place with us in the near future, ” says Hanne Jarmer.

Initiated participation in Coursera

During her time as head of education at DTU Systems Biology, Hanne Jarmer among other things was the initiator of the DTU’s participation in the online education platform Coursera. In early 2013 DTU started Scandinavia’s first online course on Coursera.

Since 2013, the new institute director has been part of the management at DTU Systems Biology, and in 2014 she became a member of the Academy of Technical Sciences. She has a master’s degree in biotechnology from DTU and in 2003 Ph.D. in bioinformatics also at DTU.

In 2005 she was among the nine candidates for the job as Denmark’s first astronaut.
